10:00 | 10:40 | Why I translated Legends of the Condor Heroes HOTSPOT China’s best-selling living author, Jin Yong, has long been considered “impossible” to translate. This year, the first book in his series Legends of the Condor Heroes was released in English for the first time. This landmark publication also marks the first trade edition of any of Jin Yong’s works in English. Translator of the series Anna Holmwood will explore why she was convinced that Jin Yong’s work could travel and how she convinced editors who had never heard of his writing to take a chance on a Chinese legend. 10:40 | 11:10 | The Georgian publishing market and creative writing BOOK MARKET The Georgian publishing industry is developing fast and Giorgi Kekelidze has a front row seat in it: as a poet, writer and essayist his work is steeped in the folklore and mythology of his country; as the youngest person ever to head Georgia’s National Library, he works on the implementation of cultural and digitalization projects. In an industry with more than 3000 publishing companies, less than 900 have employees of more nine people. Highly diversified publications and having one of the highest new books per capita ratio in the world manifest the vitality of Taiwan's publishing market. Yet, the market has contracted significantly in recent years, and the rate of deceleration is a cause for concern. The profitability of publishers has also become a topic of concern within the industry. Can Taiwan’s publishing market lift itself from the doldrums? What lessons can other Chinese language markets learn from this? Chao Cheng-ming, Chairman and General Manager of China Times Publishing Co, who has worked in the culture and media industry for more than 30 years, has in-depth and unique insights into the Taiwanese market and will share his experience and views with the audience in this session. The current book buyers‘ survey of the German Börsenverein shows that younger target groups spend a lot more of their time with online media offers than in the past years – with an increasing share of mobile devices. How do publishers, booksellers, authors and librarians cope with these findings? What can stakeholders and institutions like the Stiftung Lesen, Frankfurt Book Fair, Leipzig Book Fair and others do to promote reading?
