Storydrive interview: Interview with Zhu Yingchun

Book designer, artist and book planner, Zhu Yingchun is also Director of Nanjing Normal University Research Center of Book Culture, and Director of the Jiangsu Province Publishers Association Design and Binding Arts Committee. He was named a Leading Talent of the Press and Publishing Industry of China, and has won the “Chinese Government Award for Publishing” Outstanding Editor Award. He was also the recipient of the international award, “The Most Beautiful Book in the World”.

His book designs have been exhibited in many countries and territories around the world including the UK, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. He has been interviewed by numerous renowned international media companies including Germany’s world renowned design magazine Red Dot, the daily newspaper with the largest circulation in Germany Süddeutsche Zeitung, as well as People’s Daily, Xinhua Daily, Guangming Daily, China Daily, Ta Kung Pao, Global People and Southern Metropolis Daily. Jiefang Daily recently carried a full-page feature report on him.

Since 2004, Mr Zhu has independently planned, selected topics for and created books. The books he planned, with their perfect combination of unique binding and design characteristics, and content, have won recognition in- and outside the industry.

Stitching Up won the 2007 “The Beauty of Books in China Award” and the “World’s Most Beautiful Book” award.

Ant won “The Beauty of Books in China Award” in 2007, and in 2008, was conferred a “Special Award for the Most Beautiful Books in the World”, with its copyright exported at the same time.

The Slowpoke Snail, which won “The Beauty of Books in China Award” in 2012, and Designing Wordsmith, enjoyed numerous reprints, and their copyrights were exported.

His concept photography book, Kong Du, was conferred “The Beauty of Books in China Award” in 2013.

In 2014, Fat, which he was the planning editor, was the recipient of the “Good Chinese Book” award, while Next to Bugs was rated among the “2014 Good Books of China”.

Bugs’ Book was published in 2015, and in September that year, the Art Museum of Nanjing University of Arts held the “From the most beautiful book to the best of exhibition - the exhibition of Zhu Yingchun”. Then in September 2016, the “slow ...... Zhu Yingchun dialogues with European Artists” contemporary art exhibition was held in London, UK, receiving much attention from the artists, publishers, designers and other professionals. At the same time, Bugs’ Book became part of the permanent collection of the British Library.

Bugs’ Book won “The Beauty of Books in China Award” in 2016, and the “Most Beautiful Books in the World” silver medal in 2017. The book’s foreign language edition was officially released at the 2017 Frankfurt Book Fair.

In 2017, Shanghai’s “The Bund Art Project 2017: Ferry - Love” extended a special invitation to Mr Zhu to participate in a ferry reconstruction project, naming the ferry the “Bug Ferry”, which operated on the Huangpu River for four months.

His latest work, Transformed Birds, debuted in 2017 to overwhelming response with its unique theme and content, which have triggered and enhanced the imagination of readers. It has now received intents on cooperation from movie, animated film and other producers, and will soon take part in the 2018 activities of The London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair.
