10:00 | 10:45 | Afu’s story: How to become a self-media online celebrity in China Cross-cultural storytelling Afu was a chubby kid born in a German village. After he arrived in China, not only did he master the Chinese language, he found happy and fulfilling love. He even became a self-media online celebrity in China. Recently, Afu’s new book written in German, And a Daily Hello from the Tiger Father (und täglich grüsst der Tigervater), was very well received when it was launched in Germany, triggering a new heatwave in reading about all things Chinese. How did Afu transit from a small German village to a Chinese metropolis? How did he capitalize on humorous videos to bring the Chinese and German cultures to more people? And how did he manage to become a self-media person who even accompanied the German President on the latter’s entire visit to China? Afu shares his journey with us in this session. SPEAKER: |
10:45 | 11:15 | Changes in the Chinese language – minimalism and maximalism In the life of contemporary language, “minimalism” and “maximalism” are the two most conspicuous variables. The two echo one another and are mirror images. In today’s world, where time, attention span and attentiveness are scarce commodities, “minimalism” or “maximalism” are in fact, at the service of speed. “Highlighting one’s individuality” has become the key content of the life of the language of youths outside of communication and expressions of feelings and ideas. Although the Chinese language is still a high-context text, in today’s fast-paced and rapidly changing internet and self-media world, being tacit, restraint and forbearing are no longer sole Chinese cultural characteristics. In the language life of the younger generation, humility and self-control are now deemed overly old-fashioned. To them, trendy speech, even if it’s self-mockery or self-deprecating, has to be full of peculiarities and spectacular. SPEAKER: |
